Interplanetary Shock (or CME Arrival)
Catalog: M2M_CATALOG
Location: Earth
Event Time: 2024-01-03T14:19Z ( DSCOVR: PLASMAG )
All Detecting Spacecrafts:
DSCOVR: PLASMAG
ACE: SWEPAM
ACE: MAG
Activity ID: 2024-01-03T14:19:00-IPS-001 (version 2)
Quality of ICME Signature: 2 (clear signatures)
Note: Arrival signature characterized by a sharp amplification of magnetic field components with Btotal increasing from 5nT at 2024-01-03T14:19Z to just under 10nT at 14:25Z. A subsequent increase in solar wind speed is also observed, increasing from 425 km/s at 14:19Z to ~490 km/s at 15:08Z. Corresponding increases in density and temperature were observed at the start time as well. DSCOVR data is corroborated by ACE (which has large gaps). The initial shock is followed after 2024-01-03T16:30Z by a smooth rotation of all three magnetic field components, indicating a flux rope.
